2017 – 2018 is a season of celebration, and we have so much to be thankful for. Our DEKALB SuperSpiel is hosting our 10th event, our curling club is celebrating 30 years in our “new” facility, the Cargill Curling Training Centre is fully operational, and we live in the centre of the best country in the world! (We may be a little biased of course).
The ice was ready early September with a number of teams taking advantage of early ice to get some practice in. The season was kicked off with what we hope will become an annual “golfenspiel”. September 22-24 saw 8 teams enjoy 3 games of curling at the Morris Curling Club and a Texas scramble at the Morris Riverview Golf and Country Club. Despite the threat of rain (and in some cases not just a threat), all had a great time and went home with a small prize. Curlers and golfers from age 9 to 75 started the season with some great fun. League play began Oct 2.
With league curling underway, attention turned to getting ready for the DEKALB SuperSpiel. The DEKALB SuperSpiel, thanks all our “Super” sponsors who have helped us grow the spiel from its beginnings of 12 women’s teams and 16 men’s teams, is now and event that can host 32 women’s and 32″. We began the spiel in March 2009 when we had heard that teams were looking for an event nearing the end of the season so that they could try out new team line ups and then be ready for the fall events. After struggling to find enough teams each year for 3 years in March, we made the decision to change the event to its current time running it in November. 2011 saw the Morris Curling Club host 2 events – One in March and then a second in November. Since that decision, the spiel has grown to include 32 women’s teams and 32 men’s teams, prize money of $95,000 and running in 2 venues that includes the Morris Curling Club and the Rosenort Arena. Teams enjoy having the opportunity to play on arena ice, and this gives them experience for provincial playdowns or other larger events.
We have maintained the same “small town hospitality” and strive to give the teams the best experience possible. Both our venues offer great ice and rocks, and a place to relax where they can get some light nourishment away from the crowds.
Our sponsors have also grown with us. Our first event started with the support of 28 sponsors. This has grown to over 90 sponsors. It is this great support that allows us to provide the hospitality and the significant prize money that makes our spiel one of the top spiels in the country for prize money.
The DEKALB SuperSpiel continues to attract curlers from around the world. Since its beginnings, we have hosted teams from USA, Scotland, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, China, Japan, and of course across all of Canada.
This year as part of our celebration, we are fortunate to have the ASHAM STOMPERS join us for performances on Saturday, November 18th in Rosenort in the afternoon and in Morris in the evening. Stay tuned for more details.
